Great Gobs of Gold from the Get Go

Making money in your first levels!

So as I mentioned in the previous post, I am going to writing a bit about the things I learn while I level my new character on a new server. I'm guessing for the most part they might just be little things I notice so I'll probably just include them with updates on my leveling. Some of the things, however, I think will be a bit bigger and deserve their own post! So here we go!

So like I said, I would very much like to be able to buy Dual Specs for my new Druid as soon as he hits level 40. One of the things that draws me to Druids, as I'm sure it does many people, is the fact that they can be, well, literally every role in the game. So, 1000g by level 40? Or what I would prefer is to have multiple thousands of gold by that point so I can not only afford the Dual Spec cost, but I can spend it without leaving myself to poor to buy a second set of gear and glyphs! Before I even started leveling I had thought about this and I quickly realized I had no idea how to make money with a very very small start up. The more I thought about it the more I realized I didn't really even know how I was making all the money I have on Bury. At the time I had over 12k gold and I realized I didn't have a clue how I got it. I keep up with Markco's wonderful blog and it's forums and I use Auctioneer, but I had never really used it. Aside from the wonders of being able to break up stacks with a couple clicks, and occasionally using the Disenchant search feature, I never really delved into the things Auctioneer can do.

So the first thing I did was head over to afore mentioned Just My Two Copper forums and write up a little post stating my new realization and asking for some input. I even put it in the aptly named 'OMG I can't make gold!' section of the forums, because although I considered myself comfortably wealthy, that's exactly what I was thinking! As you can see if you read the thread there, I was given some pretty good information that at least got the gears in my head turning. A couple weeks later I found a new post someone had made which was perfect! They were just starting the game and looking for help making money too. Now that I think about it, it's pretty interesting that I, a player who although I have only been playing for 8 months now considers himself pretty well versed in the game, was looking for the same help this guy was looking for, and he hadn't even made his trial account at the time. (God if I knew now what I knew when I made my trial account...well....let's just say I wouldn't have thought it was so cool Copper Bars were worth 2s a stack instead of 1s a stack when you smelted them...) Anyways, over the course of this thread I learned a few more interesting things, and near the end, started to chime in with some of my own info.

Well, after doing my little research and overcoming my fear of the Resale search feature on Auctioneer, I accrued myself a couple silver for deposit costs, (literally, I sent my bank alt 2 silver from my new Druid) a stack of Linen Cloth, a Small Egg, and 7 Stringy Wolf Meat. So that was Friday. I made a bank alt real quick (decided on a Blood Elf because I have heard Silvermoon is a very bank alt friendly city, and I wanted to see it) and sent him the goods. The next day I logged on and found that the Linen Cloth, Egg, and I think a couple of the Wolf Meat had sold, netting me somewhere around 2 gold. I took about 15-20 minutes and using the Vendor searcher followed by the Resale searcher, I found a bunch of nice things to buy and sell or repost. Now, before I go on I should mention that I think I got pretty lucky this first day, I managed to find like 3 or 4 stacks of Linen Cloth and a bunch of Glyphs that were priced stupid low, and also it seems most things, especially glyphs, on this new server have pretty high prices. Anyways, I spent most of my two gold buying cloth and cheap glyphs, and reposted all of it. If it had all sold, I would have made over 100g. That's right, in about 30 minutes of play time I turned 2 Silver, a Small Egg, a stack of Linen Cloth and 7 Stringy Wolf Meat into 100g. In the end, not all the glyphs sold right away, but I did come back the next day to find like 70g in my mail box. Seeing as the average level 7 druid doesn't need nearly that much I bought some cheap but decent sized bags and sent them along with 2 gold back to my new main. Leaving 60 or so gold on my bank alt to play with.

So 2 silver and some crap I picked up questing turned into 100g. Not bad at all. Now, like I said I think I got lucky on some of the low priced glyphs and what not, but still, it's extremely easy to take starting area items and turn them into good amounts of money. Keep in mind I didn't even use and professions yet. Most of the people on those posts said, and rightly so I might add, that the best way to make money in early levels is pick up two gathering professions as soon as you hit level 5. And that couldn't be more true. As I leveled the rest of the way to 8 yesterday I filled out a stack of light leather which sold for almost 5 gold. With the changes in 3.2 that one stack of light leather is enough to pay for my mount at level 20! Personally I think I'm going to go with a gathering profession and enchanting, simply because I love enchanting, and in my mind it can very well be it's own gathering profession if use correctly. (Like with the aforementioned Disenchant searcher.)

I think the best way to summarize what I have learned so far from having a new low level alt is by doing just that: Summarizing it!

1) Everything Counts! It's amazing how different it is to come from a level 80 with well over 10k gold and plenty of well supported alts, to a character that is scraping to pay to train his new skills. I immediately realized how important it is to remember that any bit of profit I make is profit. While on my level 80 I scoff at anything that isn't 50g or more profit, just making 50s was amazing, at least for those first few resales! On a larger scale, I think something most players forget is to take into account the percent profit you make. A lot of the things I do on Bury involve selling old world enchant scrolls. While I may only make 15-20g on some of the cheaper ones, that usually comes from 1g or sometimes even less of initial investment! 2000% profit? Ok!

2) Everything is worth something! Ok, so not everything will sell on the Auction House, and as I mentioned before, some things are better off disenchanted, but everything is worth something one way or another, and as I said above, everything counts! One of the best things I think anyone can do, new character or old, is go under Interface->Controls and check the Auto Loot button. That way you automatically take everything from a body when you loot it, because no matter what you should always loot everything, even to just sell the grays for a few copper or silver. Once you get to 80 and even before there are gray items that go for 1-2g or even more! Also, it should be noted, especially for low level characters, that low level items can be worth a lot. Namely, low level meats. Plenty of people (myself included) don't level cooking as they level their character, and at some point they decide they want to but are too lazy to go farm the meat, so they will buy it. That means those boar ribs, or that wolf meat (in my case) can be a gold mine! Markco mentions it all the time on his blog how on his server the Boar Ribs that can be farmed right outside Orgrimmar and sold for almost a gold a piece!

3) Auctioneer is a must have! Or at least something like it. This is a wonderful add-on to have, and in most people opinion a must, especially if you intend to make a lot of gold from the auction house. If nothing else get it because then when you have a bunch of things to post, you don't have to click and drag them all, you just do it once, select your stack size, and click a button! Easy as that! You can even do that to take a whole stack and split it into smaller ones! (Which you should be doing for many things, but that's a different story.) After you get comfortable with it, and more importantly, have scanned your market for something close to a week if not more, get started trying out some of the search options. Disenchant is my favorite, it finds items that you can disenchant, and sell the mats for profit. There's also one that finds things you can buy and sell to a vendor for easy money, as well as the resale one, which buys items that are priced to low, and can simply be reposted to sell at a higher price!

4) Enchanting Rocks! This is something I didn't really mention above, and only gets a slight mention in the end of the second post I linked, but it's something that I don't think can be left out. Having an alt that can disenchant items can be an amazing way to make money. You know just as well as I do that no one wants that stupid 'of the Whale' crap and some items, though they might sell, can be disenchanted for more money. The only problem here is that if you are starting a new character and you make an alt to disenchant, you will have to level the alt too so they can get their enchanting skill high enough to keep up with you. If you don't mind leveling alts, then this isn't a problem. If you just want to get your main to 80 quickly and don't have time to be leveling an alt to disenchant, I have a simple solution. Once you reach level 55 (assuming you have the Wrath of the Lich King expansion) you can create a Death Knight. After about 30 minutes you'll be out of the starting zone and have a level 58 character sitting in a major city waiting to do your bidding! Although a character must be level 65 to train beyond level 375 in a profession, a level 375 enchanter can disenchant every item currently in the game! As a matter of fact, every green item in the game and I think most if not all the blue items can be disenchanted with only level 325 enchanting! Something that can be easily reached by a Death Knight! Keep in mind it will cost money to level an alts enchanting (unless you just use the mats you get from disenchanting stuff) but in the end it will be well worth it!

5) People are Stupid and Lazy I know, I know, I didn't believe it either. Heck, even to this day I find myself making sales on the Auction House that make me go 'Really? That worked? God people are stupid...' In my opinion this is one of the most important things to keep in mind when looking for ways to make money, especially at the early levels. Sure, sometimes people make mistakes and post things at low prices accidentally, but plenty more time people just don't care or don't know and will sell things at a very low price. So how is it your fault that you are well informed and know you can buy their stuff and sell it for more money? I think the best example of this is the fact that the Vendor search works. While Resale can be somewhat risky, vendor search only requires you to buy the item and wander over to a vendor, click, click, money. And you want an example for how you can make money of lazy people? Well, lazy rich people that is? Go buy a companion pet from a vendor, seriously, any pet. Now go look at the Auction House price for that pet...it's higher isn't it? Yea, I know what you're thinking, but believe it or not, it will actually sell for that price. Case and point, after 3.2 dropped I sold multiple Obsidian Hatchlings for somewhere between 200 and 300g a piece...they can be bought in unlimited supply from a vendor in Dalaran for 40g.

6) Make sure you don't become a stupid person. I only add this because I think people need to remember that just because they have Auctioneer and have done a bunch of scans, doesn't mean they are ready to start raking it in. You need to be smart about your purchases. Today, on my new bank alt I saw something that sold for less than a gold and could make me 25 gold for resale. Woah! Oh wait...it's a skinning knife. As stupid as people are they won't, well I really really hope they won't, buy a skinning knife off the Auction House for 26g. So just make sure you check things before you buy them. And on that note, keep in mind that Auctioneer is wrong on some of it's vendor prices, but with the new addition to the in game UI showing the vendor price, you should be good to go. (Assuming that doesn't kill the usefulness of the vendor search...)

So there ya go! Get out there and start cashing in! Because the world is full of stupid people! And I think I just found the way I'm going to end every one of my posts...

Good Luck!

Enter: Kaboosh

And so it begins!
I am going to start a series of posts about my experience with rerolling a new character, on the other faction from my main, and most importantly on a new realm! These posts will not only follow my progress as I level this new character, but I will also try to provide some insight from the things I learn leveling a new character with no outside help, now that I have spent a fair bit of time learning how the game works!

So this will be my first in what will be a sort of series of posts about leveling my new alt, Kaboosh, on a new server. I'm not transferring any characters over to help (I am a poor college student as it is and I would have to transfer items from Alliance to Horde to help him anyways!) and I *probably* won't be making a Death Knight (at least until 55) to help him with anything either! I'm really looking forward to it because I have always wanted to level another character to level 80, but never had the motivation to do it. Anyways, let me give you a little back story as to how this all came about first.

About a month ago I was talking to my cousin, the one who originally got me into this game, and who I regularly play with to this day (Though he has taken most of the summer off from WoW.) and he mentioned that he wanted to reroll new characters on a new realm this fall when we both start back at college. As much time as I have put into my characters on my current realm, I jumped at the idea and was immediately on board. As I mentioned before I have always wanted to level another character to 80 but I never really had the motivation and didn't think it was something I would ever get around to. With the chance to not only play with my cousin more but also have a partner to level along with me, I figured it would be perfect! We talked about it on and off for a few weeks, deciding that we wanted to do a PvP server (his idea, I'm still a bit skeptical, but excited) and getting ideas of what race/class combinations we wanted to play. Like I said, he first mentioned a PvP server and my initial thought was that it wouldn't be a good idea to level on a PvP server, I just didn't feel like getting beat up all the time. He convinced me that it probably, or at least hopefully, wouldn't be this horrible gank-and-camp-your-bodyfest I had envisioned. I have warmed to the idea a lot now, I definitely like PvP in battlegrounds, so being able to do some world PvPing couldn't be too bad, and since we will be leveling together we might not get beat up to much. At least not by people near our own level.

So we had decided on a server and just needed to pick a class. He was thinking an Orc Rogue or Hunter or something like that would be cool. I suggested a Hunter because the few low level ones I have played have been a blast. He ended up going with a Troll Hunter, and I think that will be a cool choice, they are pretty cool looking. I told him that he could pick whatever he wanted and I would do something in that race so we could be in the same starting zone. I was definitely thinking that a Druid was a class I would love to have at level 80, and after figuring out I could do the starting zone quests in Durotar with a Tauren it was settled. And so was born, Kaboosh, the Tauren Druid. I made him shortly before 3.2 dropped but I made sure to pick the skin color right so I could get the cat and, more importantly, bear forms I wanted! As we talked about it more we decided just to level in our own starting zones and meet up somewhere around level 10 when we both get sent to the Barrens. The more we have talked about it we have decided we probably won't be strictly leveling together, i.e. we won't be waiting until the other is on to go quest and what not, but we will try to stay close so we can do instances, group quests, and whatever else might come up. Of course I loved the idea of at least getting to 10 separately because it meant I could start NOW! And believe I am chomping at the bit to get going on this! I've gotten Kaboosh to level 8 now, and it's been a battle just to stay there or not be on him leveling him constantly! I even picked up cooking and fishing last night so I can have something to do that will allow me to play him but not level too much. We both intend to go all out on these characters, doing all the things we never did on our current 80s, leveling fishing, getting achievements, etc. We've even talked about starting our own guild when we hit 80; namely one that raids at times we can show up for. It has been a problem for both of us, although more so for me, to get into raiding on current 80s because most guilds raid at, well, normal times, which don't really work as well for me, being a busy college student with plenty of things to do and people to see. But that's a few months off, so we'll cross that bridge when we get to it!

So here we are, only a couple more weeks until we both go back to school and we can start in on this full time! (Talk about a good way to get me excited for classes to start again!) In the mean time I have spent the last couple months reading up on Druid leveling and play in general. Researching add-ons that I might find useful, and especially posting on the Just My Two Copper forums about ways to make money on a new character! (If you are looking for info on that check out some of those threads, some great ideas in there!) I definitely want to be able to dual spec this guy as soon as I hit level 40 and having extra money is always high on my priority list anyways! I'll be making a post soon on my success in this field so far too, not to mention some of the other things I am learning/relearning from having a new low level character!

I don't want to make this post too much longer, since I know all of my posts are crazy long (If you surf around on the JMTC forums enough you'll see I'm pretty long-winded there too!) but I am just really excited for what the future holds for this project! There are so many new things to learn and try out and I'm pumped! So stay tuned to see how the process goes, and see what I learn along the way!

New Races, Onyxia's Return! Oh My!

Where's the fast forward button when you need it?!?

So I have been away from WoW and the internet in general since Friday and look at what happens! Ok, actually it seems the only big thing I *missed* was the announcement on WoW.com that the new races which will be coming in the next expansion, apparently called Cataclysm, have been leaked! I was skimming through the blog yesterday on my iPod while feeding off a wireless connection I found at the mall (I know, sad, but I really needed to check my e-mail, srsly...) and I saw some mention of the new races being confirmed, I quickly skipped a few pages back into the older posts and found that one! The rumors are true?! Worgen and Goblins!? OMG! Yea, so I'm pretty pumped about that, I am definitely rerolling a Worgen when the expansion hits, even if I am thoroughly into the Horde character I am starting this fall. I'll go back to Alliance for a Worgenm for sure. Of course I'll also make a Goblin Bank Alt, because, duh, Goblins--->Money, hello? I have no idea what class I would want to play as a Worgen, obviously I don't even know what would be offered (aside from the token warrior which every class gets) but I'm sure something would be pretty epic as a deadly looking wolf-man-thing. But I'll figure that out when the time comes. For now, I'm a lot more excited about something which I just saw announced on WoW.com that's in the much nearer future......

ONYXIA IS BACK!
Oh...my...god....Awesome. As a casual player who started after Wrath was launched, I have always been very interested in going back and playing some of the older content. I have done almost all of the BC and PreBC 5 mans, since most of them are solo-able or duo-able pretty easily. And I have actually even done Onxyia once with a fellow level 80 Paladin and Warrior. (Cake walk by the way.) While blowing through old stuff and getting the old school gear just for looks (or even for functionality) is plenty of fun. I have always wanted to be able to do some of these encounters the way they were supposed to be done, even if I didn't get gear or anything useful, I wouldn't care, I have just always thought it would be fun to be able to go do all this stuff.

Well apparently my prayers, and the prayers of many of my fellow WoW players, I'm sure, have been answered. Blizzard just announced that in patch 3.2.2, coming this November, they are bringing back the Onyxia encounter as a level 80 10 and 25-man encounter. Not only that, but they are updating the loot to have new items, matching the look of the old gear, including the tier 2 set! Wait a second, holy shit! I just realized what set the tier 2 set is for rogues! It's the freaking Bloodfang Set! Hands down the coolest looking set of armor I have ever seen in the game, and a set I have wanted to complete since I first saw it. Wow...I need a moment to let this sink in... Not only do I actually get a chance to do the old Onyxia raid the way it was supposed to be (except with less people) but I will be able to make a new, and probably actually viable, set of the Bloodfang Armor!?!?? Wow, I have never been so excited about a patch. Seriously, I can't wait until November. I'll probably be well into my new horde character project then, but I'll be damned if I don't take a break to come run some Onyxia, and have a shot at some of that Bloodfang gear. Oh, also, they're adding a 310% speed flying mount called 'Onyxia Broodling' that's modeled after Onyxia herself. And since this patch will come on the 5th anniversary of WoW, players who log in on (or apparently near) the anniversary will receive an Onyxia Whelpling pet too! Awesome. But in my opinion, not nearly as awesome as getting the Bloodfang Set.

Ok, so now that I've had some time to think about this there's only one thing on my mind... Call me selfish, but my god do I hope that Blizzard doesn't make this even with the highest tier of raiding. I barely do any Naxxramas raiding as it is and god I hope that this doesn't end up being the type of thing you can't just try to PuG. I really, really, really hope this is more like a VoA or OS type of raid. Something that can be, and regularly will be PuGed. I really don't think I'm stretching too much to think that this is the way the new Onyxia Encounter might end up either. I mean, assuming it is the same as I remember the old one, then it's really a lot like VoA and OS are now, one or big trash pulls, and then the boss. Get in, get loot, get out. Or something like that. I, for one, really hope Blizzard does something like this. I honestly think that the type of people who are the most excited about something like this, bringing back old instances, really aren't going to care if the gear they get is gear of the highest level available in the game. Although, the way Blizz seems to be going of late, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they made this an encounter that was as easily accessible as OS and VoA are, but dropped gear around Ulduar, possibly even higher, level. Seeing as you can get Emblem of Conquest gear from Heroics now, would it be entirely ridiculous to make a PuGable raid that drops 219-232 gear? I don't think so. I mean I'm sure it would make a lot of people complain, but so did the EoC in Heroics change, and it still came. But like I said before, I would still be perfectly happy with 200-213 gear, and I'm guessing most people would be just as happy given the chance to go back and fight a PreBC with a chance at any kind of somewhat usable gear, something I don't think anyone ever really expected!

So whether it's to make my new Worgen (insert class here), or build a revamped set of Bloodfang Armor with stats I can actually use, or do something else equally or almost as cool, I can't wait for the next patch!

I Heart my Death Knight

OMGDKSRFUN!

Seriously, if you haven't made a Death Knight yet, go do it, and at least do the starting zone, I'll wait. Besides, you could probably finish it in a shorter amount of time than it will take me to write this.... Ok, I'm done waiting. Now finish read this then go into Outlands, even if you never want to touch your Death Knight again just go to Outlands and see how easy it is to kill some stuff. Done? OMG wasn't that awesome! I know, right!

So yea, I have Death Knight fever, which is healthier, yet probably more detrimental so my social life than Frost Fever. But who needs a social life anyways. Anyways, I started good ol' Grayskul a couple months ago now I think. I originally just wanted to see the starting zone and then have him do some professions for me. Even if you have no intentions of leveling a Death Knight, I highly recommend getting one at least out of the starting zone if not to 65. That way they can pick up a couple professions for you and help keep your money flowing. Don't have an enchanter? A level 58 Death Knight straight out of the starting zone can get high enough enchanting to DE anything currently in the game. Something which can make you a lot of extra cash! But I digress... When I first figured out how much fun DKs were to play, and more so how powerful (rare I say, overpowered...) they are, at least in Outlands, was actually more of an accident than anything. I was doing a couple of the first quest in Hellfire Peninsula and riding back to turn them in. Being used to playing my rogue I simply mounted up and rode straight on through a large group of baddies, figuring if they knocked me off my horse all I had to do was pop Vanish and be on my way.... Yea, well, guess what? A level 59 Death Knight doesn't have any aggro dropping skills, let alone one like vanish. (Duh) So there I was being ganked by a rather large group of demons most of which were a higher level than me, I figured I was a goner. Turns out, even with my then dismal knowledge of what I had to use and where I had put it on my bars, I destroyed the group with no problems, and went on my way. And there it was, I was hooked. I didn't realize it until a while later, but that was my first experience with the power of the Death Knight

I got my Death Knight to about level 60 a month ago or so and sort of let him sit in Honor Hold, doing a little bit of Inscription leveling, but not much else besides getting some nice rest experience built up. I have been starting various new toons over the past few months with intentions of leveling them to 80: My warlock, as I mentioned in my last post, a Druid who stopped at 19 and is now quite twinked out and excited about the changes that came on Tuesday, and even a priest, who only made it to 16 where she sits, waiting to either be deleted or maybe, just maybe, become a twink. I sort of realized that I don't really have the time to devote to starting a new character and leveling it to 80 right now, but I knew that I wanted to do something different than getting up close and stabbing things. I figured getting Grayskul to 80 and making him a tank would be my best option, but I didn't really know if I would even be any good at, or enjoy, tanking.

So, two weeks ago I hopped back on the Death Knight and started doing some questing, a group came up looking for a tank for Blood Furnace and thought, 'Oh, hell, why not.' so I joined up. Turns out the group would have been a massive failure as far as every heroic PuG I have done on Bury, but Blood Furnace must be easy or something because we killed it, with only one wipe. (And with Mages that pull bosses while you talk strategy, healers that don't seem to know how to heal, and a Death Knight DPS that uses Death Grip to pull things off the tank and force them to attack him, who wouldn't expect at least one wipe.)Though I did die like 5 times, not sure what my healer didn't understand about healing me, but oh well. Maybe he was too concerned with the other Death Knight that didn't understand the 7 times I told him to stop using Death Grip. (I led the Damage done and DPS as tank, so it certainly wasn't threat causing an issue. Unless of course Mr. SmartDK was using Death and Decay and I didn't notice...) Anyways, I had a blast tanking. I'm sure some of that is due to the fact that we did suprisingly well, but it was actually really fun. I haven't tanked anything else since, mostly because I have been focusing on leveling and have never been big on starting groups, but I just hit 65 last night in Zangarmarsh and I definitely want to do a few of the instances there as well as the ones in Terokkar Forest. After 3.2 hit on Tuesday I took my first 5 Emblems of Conquest and traded them in for 5EoH so I could get the Polished Spaulders of Valor for that lovely 10% experience bonus, and I need to finish up the Crusader title on Bury as well as try out the new dailies so hopefully I'll have enough for the chest soon too!

I might take a day or two to try to push his Inscription up into the 300s so I can start trying to make some money from that, and I think I want to get his mining up to 300 too so I can get all those nodes I have been seeing, but then it's back to leveling and I should be in Northrend in no time. Once he gets to level 70 I have every piece of the 'Cobalt Set' waiting in the bank for him so he will be ready to jump into tanking Northrend Dungeons. I am really excited to level another character through there since there was a lot of place I didn't see. I had a ton of rest experience on Bury so I think I got from 76-80 entirely on dailies and grinding, leaving a lot of questing to be done. I have recently been doing the PvP dailies in Grizzly Hills, and although there is really no PvP involved, they are a lot of fun, and I think by taking Grayskul through Howling Fjord and then into Grizzly Hills I can get right into them and grab a couple of nice blues from the Venture Coin rewards. I also want to quest in Sholazar since I never really did much questing there on my first 80. And I know as soon as I hit 78 I'm flying straight to Icecrown to start in on the Argent Tournament so hopefully right when I hit 80 I can be pretty well geared and jump into Heroics! (I also plan on buying both the Tempered Titansteel pieces as well as the Titansteel Destroyer.)

So with 3.2 here and all the exciting new changes, new dungeons, new ways to get badges and gear, new battlegrounds, and a newly geared twink with sweet new flag carrying abilities, I find myself pretty burnt out on everything but my Death Knight, though he is benefitting from the newly available to level 60 flyers, and my god is that wonderful, especially with the speed buff! (Thank-you Blizzard, altaholics love you.)

So if you didn't make a Death Knight when I told you to before, I highly recommend you do, even if you just experience the starting area, or even if you just let him rot (giggle) in a city and do some extra professions, not only can they be useful, but damn are they fun!

Finding Myself at 80

Who do I want to be?

So when I so rudely disappeared from this blog only weeks after I started it, I left as a fresh level 80, very unsure of where I wanted my game to go.

Ever since I was in my 30s I knew that the things I enjoyed was running around, doing solo stuff, working on professions, etc. etc. I remember the first time I soloed an instance was at level 42 and it was Deadmines. I had a blast, unfortunately being that I was a rogue and at level 42 there are 0, count 'em 0, multi-target abilities, it took FOREVER! Regardless of the hour or more it took, I still had a lot of fun, and for my purposes, made a decent amount of money. (Wool cloth is, on my server at least, priced much higher than linen or even silk cloth, and with an alt that could DE I made a little extra.)

Unlike most people, I assume, the most exciting thing for me hitting level 80 was a toss up between getting a real AoE move in Fan of Knives, and being able to do whatever I wanted to, most of those things having nothing to do with level 80. It's been a while now, but I'm pretty sure one of the first things I did at level 80, was stop playing my character. I went back to playing my level 21 Warlock. My warlock was the first character I ever played, got him to level 20 on a trial account and then when I started a full account I rolled my rogue. Going back to play my Warlock after knowing how to play the game, and after reading up on Warlocks and understanding the class more was a lot of fun. Rather than dying all the time and stopping to drink and eat like I remembered my Warlock, I was blowing through mobs with little to no downtime. (Note to everyone leveling a lock, Drain Life+Life Tap=Win) I got pretty into my Warlock again very quickly and was motivated to have that be the next class I brought to 80. I was especially looking for a class that I could solo well with, and a discussion on the forums of Just My Two Copper had suggested that warlocks were a great farming class. Anyways, with this new plan to level my Warlock I decided that I needed a pair of Heirloom shoulders to speed things up, and what better way to get those than hop back on Bury for some heroics to grab some Stone Keeper Shards.

Well, it turns out being level 80 and running heroics and doing all the other things that involve being level 80 are actually quite fun. So the lock is sitting in Redridge at level 23 where I left him, and aside from a bit of fun on a Druid (which I think I might twink after the 3.2 change to experience gain) I have spent almost all my time on Bury and I have quickly come to realize what parts of the game I like the most!

Over the past couple of months I have gotten myself pretty well geared from running Heroics (as well as getting lucky on a T7.5 Chest drop in one of the two times I was in 25 Naxx). I am very happy with where my gear is and also very happy with my DPS. (I have out DPSed much better geared rogues multiple times, but that's a different post.) My friends are always riding me about why I don't ever raid, they don't seem to understand that it's not that I don't want to but I never have the time, I am busy during pretty much every weekday night, and most of the weekend, so even though I am finally in a guild big enough to regularly run 25 man Naxx and I get invited every time, I still don't get online at common raid times enough to go. And honestly I could care less, I realized that the way I liked to play the game, was the way I wanted to, simple as that. The last few weeks I have spent most of my time in Outlands doing dailies for Netherwing and I just got my Netherwing Drake, something I wanted to do for a very long time, probably since I first saw one. I did the grind for the Kurenai in a day or two and got a few Talbuk mounts, something else I have wanted to do, probably for even longer. I've soloed and duoed a bunch of Outlands Dungeons I would have otherwise never seen. I dropped my leveling professions of Skinning for Enchanting and more recently, Leatherworking for Engineering. Of course my friends also thought I was an idiot for spending thousands of gold on leveling something as 'useless' as engineering when I could have bought a Darkmoon: Death card, because you know, I'm clearly such a min-maxxer... And let's be honest, aside from the fact that engineering was something I originally intended to level, it's soo much fun! Shooting a rocket at enemies every 45 seconds is way more fun than just having a reasonable (probably more 'useful') glove enchant. And Heck, with 3.2 coming some of those enchants, such as Flexweave Underlay and Nitro Boosts, are about to become very viable and even best in slot enchants. Not to mention the new head enchant which allows you to mind control people, AND, look cool. (Yes, please)

More recently I've even started to PvP and I love it. Although my computer probably couldn't handle me going into Wintergrasp (I lag plenty in Dalaran) I have been doing a lot of battleground and gotten myself a coulpe pieces of Season 5 gear with the honor I have earned. I Dual specced and bought a couple Daggers (one with Argent Tournament Champion Seals, and one from the Sons of Hodir) and I'm in business. Now it's just a matter of hoping the daily isn't Warsong Gulch or something equally impossible to win Alliance side in my Battlegroup... PvP has actually been great for a player like me too. I can do it whenever I want and feel like I got something accompished, and I have even started a 3v3 Arena Team with my cousin and a couple of his friends. Although we have yet to find/make time to do any matches.

Long story short, I've been level 80 for a few months now and I finally have figured out what I like to do in this game and I'm finally happy with where I am in the game. As far as plans go, I just finished two of the reputation grinds that I have wanted to do the most for a long time so I'm trying to figure out what to do next. I'll probably work on getting my rep up with the Oracles so I can start trying my luck at that pretty Green Proto-Drake, and get the last two factions I need for the Crusader title from the Argent Tourney before 3.2 hits. Beyond that I have a Death Knight at 61 who I want to get into Northrend and eventually to 80 to play around a bit as a tank. He also has a couple very pretty looking profession spots which definitely want to work on, at least one of which will be inscription, which I have heard is quite the gold mine. Maybe work on getting that druid twinked out a bit and see if I can't actually win WSG once in a while, and who knows, maybe poor Roopy will be able to wander out of the Inn in Lakeshire and go drain the life from some more unsuspecting gnolls. (But probably not until 3.2 gives him a mount, because I'm lazy like that...)

Back to the Blog

Because I've been gone far too long...

So I've been away from my blog still very new blog for a couple of months now. I got started right around the end of my semester and just bit off a lot more than I could chew. After finals, summer rolled around and I just hadn't found the time or motivation to be writing. That, coupled with the fact that I set goals for myself that were much to high led me to take some time away. Trying to not only write a regular post multiple times a week but also have weekly columns such as my farming column and reputation column was much more work than I think I ever realized. As such, I'll be changing things a bit and not having certain sections which I plan on making weekly post in. I'll still keep sections like Grinding with Gorn, etc. around, but I will make them something I stitch in with the rest of the normal posts, rather than being on a regular schedule, at least until I am more comfortable with things.

That said, I have been playing plenty of World of Warcraft recently and have found that I have a lot of things I want to write about! That, along with regularly reading other great blogs such as the well known WoW.com (formerly WoW Insider), great money making site Just my Two Copper, and a blog which I found linked in one of those first two: WoW Alone, and seeing the great writing (although very different styles and focuses), that those blogs have has gotten me motivated to get back to writing mine!

So, as this is a fresh start and I have had a couple months with a character at level 80, I will quickly restate the types of things I plan on discussing here! While this blog will still cover whatever it is that happens to be on my mind at the time, I will mostly be focusing on my personal experiences in WoW, especially soloing, alts, PvP, Achievements, Old World content, and all the other things I find to keep myself occupied!

So, once again I invite you to stop by every once in a while and see if you find anything that interests you! And of course I am always open to comments, criticism, and suggestions! So post in the comments section or feel free to shoot me an e-mail at timbermawtimes@ymail.com! I'll do my best to respond to everything! Enjoy!

Fun with Farming: Rhinos of the Tundra

Fun with Farming:
Fun with Farming is a segment where I discuss some of my favorite places to farm. One of the most important things for me in a farming place is that it's somewhere I can have fun, be entertained, and make a little bit of cash too!

Hey guys, so I just wanted to say something about my favorite new place to farm. It's certainly not the best money maker out there, but if you just have a little time and feel like doing something fun and easy this is it. So just to the south of the Amber Ledge are tons and tons of Rhinos. These guys roam around in packs of 4 to 6 and are level 68 or so with something like 6-7k health. In other words, pre-made easy to AoE groups. And there are a ton of groups, plenty so that by the time you have wiped them out the first groups will be respawning again!

I started doing this a couple weeks ago when it was the Mustard Dogs cooking Daily and I noticed there weren't any Rhino Dogs on the AH. I figured I could get my own and make them for cheap and also throw a few up on the auction house for some extra cash. They sold faster than I could have imagined even at as much as 2g each, sometimes even more! (Selling them in stacks of 4 because the quest requires 4 Rhino Dogs.)

So last night I went to do it again and decided to get a little more in depth break down! So, I threw on some poisons to use as my timer and went to work. In 30 minutes of farming I go 98 Rhino Meat and 37 Chilled Meat. Now that in and of itself isn't bad but one of my favorite little additions is the greys they drop. Each Rhino has basically a 100% chance to drop Matted fur, these sell at 11s 85c each, and in that half hour i got 174 of them, for a total of 20g 61s 90c. They also sometimes drop Cracked Horns which sell at 13s 5c each. I got 40 of these for 5g 4s. They also have your usual world greys which ended up being 6g 55s 23c. So, assuming I sold all the greys and sold the Rhino Meat as 2g each Dogs the way I have been that's 228g 57s 13c over only 30 minutes of ridiculously easy farming! And that doesn't even include the Chilled Meat which usually sell around 5g per stack, so that's another 10g. And, if you are a skinner you will get at least a Borean Leather Scrap from each one of these guys. For me that would have been 174 Borean Leather Scraps (if I hadn't dropped skinning last week, oops.)

I know it's not the best, most efficient way to make money, and it will take a while to sell the dogs if you don't flood the market in order to keep the price high, but still. I had fun mowing them down and it was easy. If I can take 30 minutes of my day and get that much done, then why not right? Especially since I will be using a decent chunk of that Rhino Meat to get my cooking up a little further with those Small Feasts!

So bop on over to the Amber Ledge and check it out! And if you are farming for some cooking mats there's also a lot of low level Mammoths near by but I haven't tried farming them too much yet. When I do, I'll let you know how it goes!

Good Luck!
